How to Deal with Property Boundary Disputes

Something that crops up time and time again, causing issues between neighbours, is disagreements regarding the property boundary. Issues with fences normally arise when the fence was existing before either party moved into the adjoining properties. This leads to neither party truly knowing who owns the fence.

Whilst this often isn’t an issue, if you believe a neighbour should be maintaining a fence and they think that you should be doing the same, or if you wanted to make an alteration that the other party isn’t happy with, this can lead to disputes.

These kinds of enquiries come through to the building surveying firm, Munday + Cramer, frequently. Munday + Cramer’s director and property surveying expert, Lee Hatwell, would be more than happy to provide you with a comprehensive insight into property boundary disputes and how to deal with them.

Lee will cover what the guidelines are for fences in the UK, in regards to height, fence ownership, and where the issues typically arise; whether a homeowner can move/remove a neighbour’s fence on their property; what can be done to their side of a neighbour’s fence; and what to do when a boundary dispute isn’t about fences.

A lot of very common yet confusing questions will be answered. Please get in touch with Munday + Cramer if you would like to hear more and say you read about them on The X Generation!
